Sun, Water & Reef Essentials

🪸

Reef-Safe Sunscreen Required

Roatán sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest in the world. Please bring mineral-only, reef-safe sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide). Chemical sunscreens are harmful to coral and are restricted on the reef. We'll be asking all guests to use reef-safe products during water activities.

Reef-safe sunscreen SPF 30+
Mineral-only — zinc oxide or titanium dioxide
Reef-safe sunscreen SPF 50+ (face)
Your face gets extra exposure on the water
Lip balm with SPF
After-sun lotion / aloe gel
Even the best sunscreen misses spots
Snorkel mask (optional)
We provide gear — but your own mask = better fit + no fog
Waterproof dry bag
For the Caye Mayor boat excursion
Waterproof phone case or pouch
You will want photos on the water
Reusable water bottle
Hydration is everything in the Caribbean heat
Insect repellent
DEET or picaridin — for evening hours

Things I never travel without

After years of leading retreats across 12+ countries, these are the things that consistently make the difference between a good trip and a great one.

🧴
Raw Elements Sunscreen
My reef-safe SPF go-to. Thick and effective — I wear this every single day on the water.
💊
Liquid IV Hydration
I put these in my water bottle every day in tropical climates. Game changer for energy.
🎒
Osprey Ultralight Daypack
Perfect for excursion days. Packs into itself and holds everything you need for a day on the water.
📱
Waterproof Phone Pouch
You will be on boats and in the ocean. This is not optional. Get a floating one.
🌊
Dry Bag (10L)
For the Caye Mayor boat excursion — keeps your stuff dry when waves or spray happen.
🧘
Travel Yoga Mat (foldable)
Optional but so worth it — the morning yoga sessions on the beach are magical.

Leave at Home (Seriously)

⚠️

Skip These

  • Chemical sunscreen — harmful to coral, please use mineral only
  • Heavy jewelry or valuables — simple, waterproof accessories only
  • Formal shoes or heavy footwear — island life is casual
  • Too many "nice" clothes — you'll wear a swimsuit and cover-up 80% of the time
  • Drone — permit required in Honduras; leave it home unless you've sorted the paperwork
  • Single-use plastic — Roatán's marine ecosystem is precious; let's protect it
