🥾 What to Pack — Soča Valley, June 2027

This is a week where you get wet on purpose. Canyoning, paddleboarding, waterfall swimming holes — and then alpine hikes where the wind at the top has other ideas about the temperature.

Late June in the Julian Alps is generous. Warm valley days, cool nights, and water that stays properly cold no matter how hot the afternoon gets, because it comes off the mountains.

Pack for two climates and one very cold river. Layers, and things that dry fast.

Expected Weather

Early summer in the mountains. Long daylight, warm afternoons, and a genuine drop once the sun goes behind a ridge.

🌞 Valley days

Warm

Shorts-and-t-shirt weather most afternoons. Comfortable for walking, swimming and sitting outside for hours.

⛰️ Up in the Alps

Noticeably cooler

Every bit of elevation takes the temperature down and the wind up. A summit in a wet t-shirt is a cold summit.

💧 In the water

Cold. Properly cold.

The Soča is snowmelt-fed and stays bracing all summer. That is exactly why it’s that colour — and why we provide wetsuits for canyoning.

🌧️ Afternoon thunderstorms are an alpine summer habit. They usually roll through and clear. A packable rain shell means the day doesn’t stop for one.

These describe typical late-June conditions in the Julian Alps, not a forecast — check closer to travel. Any given week can run warmer, cooler or wetter.

Absolute Essentials

If you forget everything else, don’t forget these.

  • Passport, valid at least 3 months beyond departureSlovenia is in the EU and Schengen. US, UK, Canadian and Australian passport holders travel visa-free for short stays — see your confirmation page
  • Broken-in hiking boots or trail shoesThe single most important item here. New boots plus a week of trails equals blisters by day two
  • Swimsuit × 2Two, so one is always dry. You’ll wear one under your wetsuit for canyoning and again at every swimming hole
  • Waterproof jacket with a hoodPackable is fine. Alpine weather turns fast and we go out anyway
  • Daypack, 20–30 litresEnough for water, a layer, lunch and a camera on a full day out
  • Reusable water bottleSlovenian tap and spring water is excellent. You will refill it constantly and buy almost no bottled water all week
  • Any prescription medication in its original labelled containerBring more than the trip length
  • Travel insurance documents — check canyoning and mountain activities are coveredPlenty of standard policies exclude adventure sports. Read the exclusions before you buy, not after

Clothing

Active days, relaxed evenings, and one very good dinner outdoors under the stars.

Active & Hiking

  • Moisture-wicking t-shirts × 3–4Merino or synthetic. Not cotton — it stays wet and then stays cold
  • Long-sleeve top × 1–2Sun cover on exposed trails and a layer for the summits
  • Fleece or light insulated jacketYou’ll want it every evening and on every ridge
  • Hiking shorts and/or trousers × 2Quick-dry beats jeans every time
  • Hiking socks × 4–5Wool, not cotton. More pairs than you think
  • Yoga clothes × 2Morning yoga is optional and mats are provided

Everything Else

  • Comfortable clothes for the property and evenings
  • One nicer outfit for the Forest FeastNot formal — just something you’d be happy in for photographs at a long outdoor table
  • Something warm for after darkFire pit under alpine stars. It gets cool
  • Underwear and sleepwearSome bathrooms are shared — something you’d wander down the hall in
  • Sun hat or capThere is very little shade on an alpine trail
  • Light gloves and a warm hatOptional, and weightless. If we go high and it’s windy you’ll be glad

The Water Kit

Wetsuits, helmets and harnesses for canyoning are provided, along with all paddleboarding equipment. This is what comes from you.

  • Swimsuit to wear under a wetsuitSomething that stays put. A rash guard underneath is comfortable if you have one
  • Shoes you don’t mind soakingOld trainers or closed-toe water shoes — strappy sandals come off in moving water. Tell us if you’d rather use the guides’ neoprene boots and we’ll arrange sizing
  • Quick-dry towelHouse towels are provided, but you want a separate one that lives in your daypack
  • Dry bag or waterproof phone pouchThe difference between photographs of a canyon and a very quiet evening
  • A plastic bag or wet bag for soaked kitSomething in your pack will be dripping on the way home most days

Footwear

Three pairs covers the whole week.

  • Hiking boots or trail shoes — already broken inGrip matters more than anything on limestone and roots. Wear them for a few long walks before you fly
  • Shoes for the waterSee the water kit above. Closed toe, and expect them to be wet most of the week
  • Trainers or sandals for the propertyFor evenings, travel days and wandering the grounds
⚠️ The single most common packing mistake here: brand new boots. Blisters on day two of an active week ruins the week. If your boots are new, wear them properly before you travel — not around the house, actually out walking.

Sun & Skin

Alpine sun is stronger than it feels, and water throws it straight back up at you. People burn on this retreat while feeling perfectly cool.

  • Lip balm with SPFThe most-forgotten item on any packing list

  • After-sun or moisturiserSun plus cold water plus wind is hard on skin by about day four

Health & Toiletries

Health

  • Prescription medicationsOriginal containers, more than you need
  • Blister plastersBring them even if you never get blisters. Someone will need them
  • Ibuprofen or your usual painkiller
  • Electrolyte tabletsHot hiking days plus a lot of water equals a flat afternoon without them
  • Personal first aid bitsGuides carry proper kit. This is for the small stuff
  • Motion sickness tablets, if you’re proneThe valley roads are beautiful and extremely wiggly

Toiletries

  • Your usual toiletriesSome bathrooms are shared — a small wash bag makes life easier
  • Quick-dry towelHouse towels provided; this one is for the river
  • Hair ties, brushLong hair and a wetsuit hood do not negotiate
  • Leave-in conditionerCold water and sun, every day, for six days

Tech & Extras

  • Phone, charger and a battery packLong days out and no outlets on a mountain
  • Camera or action cameraIf you own a GoPro, this is its week. Bring the chest or head mount for the canyon
  • Head torchUseful around the property after dark, and it weighs nothing
  • Trekking poles, if you use themOptional, but your knees will notice on the descents
  • Book, journal, cardsThere is downtime and it is one of the better parts
  • A small amount of eurosSlovenia uses the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but cash is handy for small village stops, markets and tips

Arrival & Departure — Book Around These

Airport transfers are included both ways from Ljubljana Airport (LJU). Please send your flight details on the guest form as soon as you have them.

🚖 Arrival day

Pickup 3:00 PM

We collect the group at Ljubljana Airport at 3:00 PM local time. Land before then — earlier is completely fine, later is a problem.

✈️ Departure day

Dropoff 11:30 AM

The transfer reaches the airport at 11:30 AM.

⏰ Your flight home

1:00 PM or later

Do not book a departing flight before 1:00 PM. Check this before you buy the ticket, not after. Email us if yours conflicts and we’ll help you sort out a solution!

💬 Arriving a day early or staying on? Tell us. It changes nothing about your retreat — we just want to know who we’re meeting and when.

Staying On? Ljubljana, Bled & Venice

Slovenia is small and very well connected, so adding a few days is easy. Nothing much changes in your bag — a couple of things help.

  • Ljubljana — your arrival and departure cityWalkable, café-heavy, and lovely in the evening. One casual outfit and normal shoes is all you need beyond the hiking kit
  • Lake Bled — under an hour from the airportYour swimsuit and trainers already cover it
  • Venice — close enough by road to be temptingHotter and much busier than the valley in summer. Pack for a city, and something with covered shoulders for the churches
  • Something you’d wear to dinnerLjubljana’s food scene is genuinely good and you’ll want to use it
