🥾 What to Pack — Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Coast, May 2027

Here is the thing about the west of Ireland at the end of May: it is the best window of the year. Long daylight, everything green, and the summer crowds not yet arrived.

You will also be moving between an island, a mountain range and a clifftop in the same week — and the Atlantic sets the weather for all of it.

Layers. Layers are the whole answer. And boots you have already broken in.

Expected Weather

Late May is mild rather than warm, with very long evenings. The temperature matters far less here than the wind and the rain do.

🌞 Daytime

Cool & bright

Comfortable walking weather when the sun is out. Pleasant in a base layer and a fleece while you are moving uphill.

🌙 Overnight

At or below freezing

Cool rather than cold overnight, but the wind off the Atlantic makes it feel sharper. Evenings outside need a proper jacket, not a hoodie.

❄️ At elevation

Colder, and possibly snowy

Every 1,000m up is meaningfully colder and windier. Rain on a high trail is not unusual at all. Waterproofs live in the daypack, not the suitcase.

🌧️ Sun, wind and rain in the same afternoon. That is not a bad day here, it is a normal one — which is exactly why a proper waterproof beats an extra jumper.

These describe typical late-May conditions on the west coast of Ireland, not a forecast — check closer to travel. Any given week can run warmer, colder or wetter.

Absolute Essentials

If you forget everything else, don’t forget these.

  • PassportUS, UK, Canadian and Australian passport holders travel to Ireland visa-free for short stays. Ireland is in the EU but NOT in Schengen — see your confirmation page
  • Broken-in hiking bootsThe single most important item here. New boots plus five hikes equals blisters by day two
  • Waterproof jacket with a hoodNon-negotiable. Mountain weather changes fast and we hike regardless of a shower
  • Warm insulated jacketFor evenings, summits and anywhere the wind finds you
  • Daypack, 20–30 litresEnough for water, layers, lunch and a camera on a full day out
  • Reusable water bottle or bladder, 2 litresLong walking days and a lot of wind. Refill it everywhere
  • Any prescription medication in its original labelled containerBring more than the trip length
  • Travel insurance documents — check hiking and evacuation are coveredCheck that hiking and coastal walking are covered, and that you have proper trip protection

Clothing — The Layer System

Three layers, adjusted through the day. Warm walking uphill, cold at the top, cold again the moment you stop.

Base & Mid Layers

  • Base layers × 2–3Merino or synthetic. Not cotton — it holds damp and then holds cold
  • Fleece or wool mid-layer × 2
  • Insulated jacket — down or syntheticPacks small, earns its space every evening
  • Long-sleeve tops × 2–3
  • T-shirts × 2–3For layering and warm afternoons

Outer & The Rest

  • Waterproof shell jacketThe most important item on this list after boots
  • Waterproof trousersGenuinely worth it — wet legs stay wet all day on a mountain
  • Hiking trousers × 2Quick-dry beats jeans every time
  • Comfortable clothes for the house and evenings
  • Yoga clothes × 2–3There is a dedicated yoga barn; mats are provided
  • Underwear and sleepwearYou’re sharing a house — something you’d wander to the kitchen in

Extremities — Don’t Skip These

  • Warm hatWeightless, and you will wear it every morning and every summit
  • GlovesCold wet hands on an Atlantic clifftop are genuinely miserable
  • Buff or neck gaiterCuts the wind. Tiny item, big difference
  • Hiking socks × 5–6Wool, not cotton. More pairs than you think

Footwear

Three pairs covers the whole week.

  • Waterproof hiking boots — already broken inAnkle support matters on scree and roots. Wear them for a few long walks before you fly
  • Trainers or casual shoesFor towns, travel days and the evenings
  • Something soft for the houseSlippers or thick socks. Your feet will thank you after a hiking day
⚠️ The single most common packing mistake here: brand new boots. Blisters on day two of a five-hike week ruins the week. If your boots are new, wear them properly before you travel — not around the house, actually out walking.

Sun, Wind & Skin

People underestimate the Atlantic. It is rarely hot, so nobody thinks about sun — then the wind and the glare off the water do a week’s worth of damage in an afternoon on a clifftop.

  • Lip balm with SPFCold wind plus high UV. The most-forgotten item on any packing list
  • SunglassesGlare off rock and snow is brutal at elevation
  • Good moisturiser and hand creamDry mountain air, especially on the Alberta side

Health & Toiletries

Health

  • Prescription medicationsOriginal containers, more than you need
  • Blister plastersBring them even if you never get blisters. Someone will need them
  • Ibuprofen or your usual painkillerFor the day after a long evening in a pub with live music
  • Electrolyte tabletsUseful after a long walking day, especially in the wind
  • Personal first aid bits

Toiletries

  • Your usual toiletriesBathrooms are shared — a small wash bag makes life easier
  • Quick-dry towelOptional; house towels are provided
  • Hair ties, brush

Tech & Extras

  • Phone, charger and a battery packCold drains batteries fast. Keep your phone in an inside pocket on cold days
  • Camera, if you bring oneThe wildlife and the light are the reason you’ll wish you had
  • Head torchUseful around B&Bs and on the island, and it weighs nothing
  • Trekking poles, if you use themOptional, but your knees will notice on the descents
  • Book, journal, cardsThere is downtime and it is one of the better parts
  • Small dry bag or waterproof pack linerKeeps spare layers dry in your daypack
🔌 Bring a Type G adapter. Ireland runs 230V on the same three-rectangular-pin plug as the UK. From North America you need an adapter, and a converter for anything without dual voltage.

Staying On? Dublin & Beyond

If you’re adding a city before or after, nothing much changes — but a couple of things help.

  • Dublin — you need a night here on May 22 anywayMake it two and actually see the city. One casual outfit beyond the walking kit is plenty
  • Galway, Kerry or the north — easy add-ons either endSame kit as the retreat. Ireland is small and the trains are good
  • Something you’d wear to dinnerDublin and Galway both punch well above their size for dinner

Arrival & Departure — Book Around These

Airport transfers are included both ways from Dublin Airport (DUB). Send your flight details on the guest form as soon as you have them.

🚌 Arrival day

Depart 8:00 AM

We collect the group at Dublin Airport at 8:00 AM on Day 1 from your Dublin hotel. You need to be in the city the night before — that night is not included.

✈️ Departure day

Dropoff 12:00 PM

The transfer reaches Dublin by 12:00 PM on the final day.

⏰ Your flight home

2:00 PM or later

Do not book a departing flight before 2:00 PM. The 90-minute buffer past the noon dropoff is deliberate — mountain roads and check-in queues both happen. Email us if yours conflicts and we’ll help you sort out a solution!

💬 Arriving a day early or staying on in Dublin or heading west? Tell us. It changes nothing about your retreat — we just want to know who we’re meeting and when.
