Venice — The Real Thing + Private Tour with Lucia
GondolaPrivate History TourDinner
+

Gondola ride — go early before the crowds arrive. The canals are quieter, the light is golden, the whole thing feels like a dream.

✦ Private Tour with Lucia — How Venice Was Built & The Jewish Ghetto
Lucia · venicewalksandtours.it · luciaveniceguide@gmail.com · +39 349 225 8189
Meeting point: Campo San Geremia, at the well in the middle of the campo · ~2 hours

Lucia is one of Venice's most extraordinary guides — a licensed historian accredited by both the Venice Jewish Community and the local Rabbi, which makes her one of the only guides in the city who can take you inside the synagogues. She's been doing this for years and every single review calls her the best guide they've ever had.

The tour starts where Venice itself started: the impossible engineering feat of building a city on water. Millions of wooden piles driven into lagoon mud that petrified over centuries into something harder than stone — the Rialto Bridge alone stands on 12,000 of them. Lucia makes you understand what you're walking on, and why it's still standing 1,500 years later.

Then into Cannaregio — the real Venice, the neighborhood where your hotel sits, where locals actually live. The back canals, the hidden courtyards, the architecture that tells the Republic's story without a single museum plaque.

The tour ends in the Jewish Ghetto — the oldest in the world, and where the English word "ghetto" was literally invented in 1516. Lucia explains the Republic's complex relationship with its Jewish residents: how they were confined but also essential (Venice banned Christians from lending money, so Jewish bankers became the financial engine of the empire), how five synagogues were hidden inside ordinary-looking buildings, how Shakespeare wrote Shylock from stories he'd heard about this street. She covers the Holocaust deportations too — 246 Venetian Jews sent away, seven came back — with the weight and care it deserves.

Optional add-on: Lucia can take you inside the synagogues — contact her directly to extend the tour and arrange access. Worth it if you have the time.

Wander Cannaregio at your own pace — you'll know the neighborhood now. Find a bacaro for a spritz and cicchetti, or follow Lucia's restaurant tip for dinner.

Honest prices, zero pretension, and the best kind of last dinner in Italy.

✦ Self-Guided E-Bike Ride — Chianti Countryside
Bikes delivered to Marina's door Saturday evening — they'll be waiting for you when you wake up.

Set off into the back roads of Chianti at your own pace: cypress-lined lanes, vineyard gates, the occasional dog who thinks he owns the road. The e-bikes handle the hills so you can handle the views. No guide, no group, no schedule — just the two of you and one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.

The route takes you naturally toward Radda in Chianti — which means you can ride directly to Giorgia's cooking class and arrive a little wind-blown and happy. About 9km through the vines. Best arrival ever.
✦ Private Cooking Class with Giorgia — Radda in Chianti
Radda in Chianti · ~20 min from Panzano · via Traveling Spoon

Meet Giorgia and Luigi at their farmhouse overlooking the Chianti Classico vineyards. Giorgia is a professional chef, sommelier, and former restaurant owner of 20+ years — she cooks the way Italian grandmothers wish they could. You'll make fresh pasta from scratch, a rich Tuscan ragù, and her legendary tiramisu from family recipes passed through generations, then sit down together for a long lunch with local Chianti wine and views across the olive groves.

This isn't a cooking demonstration. It's cooking in someone's home, at someone's table, with someone who genuinely loves feeding people. The lunch at the end is one of those meals that resets what you think food can taste like.

3 hours total
Drive to Siena · or · Keep Riding Through Chianti
Two very good problems to have after a long lunch in the vines.

Option A — Siena (~45 min drive): One of Italy's most perfectly preserved medieval cities — the fan-shaped Piazza del Campo, the striped Duomo, ancient alleys that haven't changed in 600 years. Easy afternoon on foot.

Option B — Keep the bikes going: Follow the Chiantigiana south at your own pace. Pull over at Castello di Volpaia, Fontodi, or Badia a Passignano for an estate tasting. Bikes get picked up from Marina's Monday — so there's no rush to return them.

Back to Panzano. Ask Marina for her recommendation, or pick up a bottle from Mimmo's and sit on the terrace. No schedule. This is it.

Early start tomorrow — leave Panzano by 8:45am to return the rental car at Florence SMN and catch the 10am Frecciarossa.

✦ Pompeii Scavi — Private Guided Tour
The Roman city frozen by Vesuvius in 79AD — streets, bakeries, theatres, homes, all perfectly preserved under the ash. Last entry 3:30pm in October · Allow ~2 hours with a guide.

Private guide arranged in advance — this is the difference between walking past things and actually understanding what you're looking at. A licensed Pompeii archaeologist or historian brings the city to life: the election graffiti still painted on walls, the bakery with carbonised loaves still in the oven, the body casts of people in their final moments. It's one of the most haunting and extraordinary sites in the world, and a good guide makes it unforgettable rather than overwhelming.

Don't miss: the Forum, the amphitheatre, the Villa of the Mysteries frescoes, and the Garden of the Fugitives.

Book via: contexttravel.com · viator.com · or directly through a licensed Pompeii guide association

Hotel Luna Convento
Via P. Comite 33, Amalfi
📞 +39 089 871002
www.lunahotel.it

An 800-year-old former Franciscan monastery perched above Amalfi — saltwater pool cut into the cliff, two restaurants, a medieval cloister, and the kind of character that can't be built from scratch. Five-minute walk to town through a tunnel shortcut. Wake up in a monastery. It's exactly as good as it sounds.

Arrive, check in, exhale. Drink on the terrace watching the lights come on across the coast. Dinner at the hotel or in Amalfi town — tonight is about arriving. Save the best for last.

Scooter Day — The Coast Road
Scooter RentalRavelloPositano or Nerano
+

Rent a 125cc scooter in Amalfi and drive the SS163 coast road. Pull over anywhere, park anywhere, stop at every viewpoint. Amalfi → Ravello (hilltop gardens, Villa Cimbrone) → back to the coast → your choice from there.

Option A — Positano Lunch
Park the scooter, walk the famous steps down to the beach, and find a table for spaghetti alle vongole. Positano at midday is loud and beautiful and worth every minute. Swim if the weather allows, then ride back to Amalfi for sunset from the terrace.
Option B — Push All the Way to Nerano
For the adventurous: keep riding past Positano to Marina del Cantone, Nerano — the tiny fishing village where spaghetti alla Nerano (zucchini, basil, provolone del Monaco) was invented. Lunch at Lo Cantinone or Taverna del Capitano right on the water. This is a full-day mission — ~1.5 hrs each way on the coast road — and one of the great scooter rides in Italy. Leave early.
October weather is generally 18–22°C / 65–72°F but can be unpredictable. Ferry is the backup plan if the road conditions change.

A private boat along the Amalfi Coast as the afternoon light turns gold — hidden coves, ancient Saracen watchtowers, the cliffs going amber as the sun drops toward the Tyrrhenian Sea. The boat returns to Amalfi around 8pm — just in time for dinner.
