🍂 What to Pack — Coastal Maine, September 2027

Here’s the thing about the Maine coast in late September: it is genuinely lovely, and it is genuinely colder than you think — particularly the moment you get on a boat.

Days can be mild and bright. Mornings are crisp. And once the sun drops, or the wind comes across the water, it turns properly cold, fast.

Layers. Layers are the whole answer.

Expected Weather

Late September into early October is the changeover. You are arriving at the tail of a mild autumn and leaving in the early part of a cold one.

🌞 Daytime highs

Low 60s °F

Around 61 °F (16 °C) when we arrive, easing toward the mid-to-upper 50s (13–14 °C) by the time we leave.

🌙 Overnight lows

Upper 40s °F

Roughly 48–50 °F (9 °C). Cold enough that the fire is a genuine feature rather than a nice idea.

🌪 On the water

Feels far colder

Wind off the Atlantic strips several degrees off whatever the thermometer says. Assume boat days feel 10–15 °F colder than land.

🌧️ Rain is likely at some point. Coastal Maine gets weather off the ocean year-round and autumn is not a dry season. Plan for at least one wet day rather than hoping.

Figures are historical averages for the Bar Harbor / Acadia area, not a forecast — check closer to travel. Any given week can run warmer or colder.

What You’re Actually Packing For

🏦 Around the House

Mild & cosy

Yoga, meals, and evenings by the fire. Comfortable clothes and something warm for sitting outside after dark.

🚤 On the Water

Cold & windy

The lobster haul and island days. Wind off the Atlantic in autumn cuts straight through. This is the one people underestimate.

🏕 Acadia & the Trails

Variable

Warm walking uphill, cold at the top. Granite underfoot, often damp. Layers you can shed and put back on.

⚠️ The single most common packing mistake: dressing for the forecast rather than for the boat. The air temperature on land tells you very little about how it feels heading out to a mussel farm at speed. Bring a genuine windproof layer, not just a fleece.

Absolute Essentials

If you forget everything else, don’t forget these.

  • Government-issued photo IDMaine is a US state — domestic travellers don’t need a passport. Bring one if arriving internationally
  • Any prescription medication in its original labelled containerBring more than the trip length
  • Travel insurance documentsScreenshot them too. See the confirmation page for why we push this
  • A properly warm, windproof jacketNon-negotiable. See the boat, above
  • Waterproof rain jacketCoastal autumn. It rains, and it’s wet on the water regardless
  • Waterproof rain trousersGenuinely worth it here — on a boat or on a wet trail, wet legs stay wet all day
  • Credit/debit card and some cashFor personal purchases and gratuities for local guides

Clothing

Everything on this trip is casual. There is no dinner you need to dress up for, and nobody is checking.

Layers

  • Base layers × 2Merino or synthetic. Not cotton — it holds damp and then holds cold
  • Fleece or wool mid-layer × 2
  • Windproof / waterproof shellThe most important item on this list
  • Insulated jacket for evenings
  • Long-sleeve tops × 3–4
  • T-shirts × 2–3For layering and mild afternoons

The Rest

  • Hiking trousers × 2Quick-dry beats jeans on wet granite
  • Comfortable trousers for the house
  • Warm socks × 5–6Wool. More than you think
  • Underwear
  • SleepwearYou’re sharing a house — something you’d wander to the kitchen in
  • Yoga clothes × 2–3Daily yoga; mats are provided

Extremities — Don’t Skip These

  • Warm hatWeightless, and you will wear it on the boat
  • GlovesHandling wet rope and mussels in cold wind is exactly as unpleasant as it sounds
  • Scarf or buffCuts the wind off your neck. Small item, big difference

Footwear

Three pairs covers the whole week.

  • Waterproof hiking bootsAcadia’s granite is uneven and often wet. Ankle support earns its place
  • Shoes you don’t mind soakingBoat days. Something with grip on a wet deck
  • Comfortable indoor shoesFor the house. Slippers are not overkill

Hiking Gear

  • Hiking polesOptional, but Acadia’s granite is steep in places and hard underfoot — poles save your knees on the descent. Collapsible ones pack flat
  • DaypackBig enough for a shed layer, water and lunch
  • Broken-in bootsDo not bring brand-new boots on a trip with two guided hikes and a day in Acadia
👞 On grip: wet granite and a wet boat deck are two of the more slippery surfaces you’ll meet. Whatever you bring, check the soles aren’t worn smooth before you pack them.

Sun Protection

People assume autumn means they can skip this. On the water they’re wrong — low sun reflecting off the Atlantic is bright and relentless, and a full day out on a boat catches more of it than an afternoon on land in July.

🌞 We partner with Stream2Sea. They’re woman-owned, and their Reef-Safer™ mineral sunscreen uses non-nano zinc oxide and helps prevent sunburn. It’s HEL Labs Protect Land + Sea certified, plant-derived, and consciously made with a lower-impact formulation.

  • Mineral sunscreen for face and handsThe bits that stay exposed while everything else is under a jacket. SPF 30 and 45 are water resistant (80 minutes) — reapply after time on the water regardless
  • Lip balm with SPFSun and wind together. The most-forgotten item on any packing list
  • SunglassesGlare off water is worse than glare off land. Bring a spare pair if you lose them easily
  • Shampoo, conditioner and body wash formulated to be safer for aquatic lifeWhat rinses off you ends up going somewhere — and here, that somewhere is the working coast we’re eating from

Health & Toiletries

Health

  • Prescription medicationOriginal containers, extra days’ worth
  • Pain relief / anti-inflammatory
  • Bonine, Dramamine or your preferred motion sickness supplementTake it BEFORE you board, not once you feel it — that’s the whole trick. Check with your pharmacist if you’re on other medication
  • Ginger chews or acupressure bandsIf you’d rather not take a tablet. Some people swear by them
  • Blister plastersNew boots plus Acadia is a classic combination
  • Lip balmWind chaps lips faster than sun does
  • Hand creamCold, wind and salt water

Toiletries

  • Your usual kit, travel sizes
  • SunglassesLow autumn sun off the water is genuinely dazzling
  • Contact lenses / glasses + spares
  • Earplugs and an eye maskIf you’re a light sleeper in a shared house
